Guy's Bar Mitzvah

Two days after Yom Kippur, Guy celebrated his bar mitzvah, keeping his hand tightly over the hole in his throat so that the blessings he slowly recited over the Torah could be heard by the dozens of people who had crowded into the Hadassah Medical Center’s Abbell Synagogue under the beautiful Chagall Windows to rejoice with him.
Alongside the family and friends, every staffer who could be spared from Hadassah’s Pediatric Department, as well as many of their young patients; medical, volunteer personnel from all over the Medical Center who’ve come to know Guy during the year-plus he’s been hospitalized were there; as well as the entire Beitar Jerusalem Football team; Israel’s most popular football team and a local sports legend.
“This is a child whom we almost lost twice, who is one of only a handful to survive the very rare and very severe disease he suffers, and who is currently making good progress.”
Guy celebrated his bar mitzvah a few weeks late. When he turned 13 a month ago, he was back in intensive care, struggling once more for his life. His is fighting lymphangiomatosis, a disease so rare that only 55 people worldwide are reported to suffer from it. None of Hadassah’s staff had ever seen it outside the textbooks.
