Hadassah’s Future

The Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower at Hadassah is our towering vision.
A 13 storey structure is now under construction with 500 beds, 20 operating theatres, and a 50 bed intensive care unit. The new building will provide a therapeutic environment for patients and their families, with beautiful healing gardens, rooms designed to meet patient needs, and a comprehensive recourse centre.

Why A Legacy?

Have you considered including a gift to your favourite charity in your will? As the largest single source of income to UK charities, legacies make a vital difference to good causes across the country. A legacy allows you to make your mark on the future by providing for those good causes that interested you during your lifetime.

All estates, which may include a family house, are subject to 40% Inheritance Tax above a threshold. Legacies to UK registered charities are not subject to Inheritance Tax and will have the effect of raising your tax exempt threshold by the amount of the gift.

Good estate planning does not just arrange for the passing on of that property... more importantly it is about the creation, conservation and use of your assets to ensure the future.

Examples of How to make a Difference:

Eli Gold

Israel has a high incidence of chronic hepatitis B and C virus infections due to its levels of immigration. This is associated with an increased risk of developing primary liver cancer.

Previously, diagnosis was made at a very late stage of this disease when treatment options are limited and only partially successful. As a result, most patients with HCC would not live more than several months from diagnosis.

When detected at an early stage, primary liver cancer is nowadays a treatable disease through surgery, ablative therapy, anti-viral treatment and in some cases liver transplantation.

The Eli Gold Research Laboratory was established at the Hadassah Liver Unit in the 1990’s through the foresight of a big-hearted donor from Aberdeen, Scotland in the form of a generous legacy. Since then, hundreds of patients have been referred to the outpatient clinic for screening, evaluation and treatment of primary liver cancer. This was the first such project in Israel. Each year several hundred patients at risk must be evaluated periodically for early detection of the liver tumours.

Michael & Rosa Cohen

Life had been good for Mr & Mrs Cohen. During their forty year marriage they had raised three wonderful children Mr Cohen’s success in the investment banking field had afforded them many opportunities. As they celebrated each child’s Barmitzvah and Batmitzvah in Jerusalem, the Cohen family also developed great love for the country and the people. They had been philanthropic throughout their lives but now seemed the ideal time to reassess their good fortune and through their will, create a lasting legacy.

On their many trips to Israel Mr. and Mrs. Cohen visited the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. They believed that Hadassah’s innovative work in stem cell and cancer research would impact future generations.

After consulting with their solicitor, the Cohen’s made their decision and drew up their wills leaving a residuary legacy to Hadassah. They discovered that their legacy could be structured to fulfil all of their wishes. Simply by designating Hadassah’s area of greatest need they could leave a legacy that would enable Hadassah’s work to benefit future generations.

David Lansky

David Lansky, a British research doctor, had collaborated with many esteemed colleagues, discovering diverse medical treatments. He attended many international seminars and medical conferences which provided him with important exposure to the most current research.

At one seminar, Hadassah Medical Organisation was presenting its innovative work on Gene Therapy. Dr Lansky felt that this was a vital area of medical research and decided to visit Israel and tour Hadassah Medical Organisation. He found that many of their projects interested him, it was a most valuable experience.
David was a man of action and a mentor to others. He was determined to share his passion for medical education. He now realised where he wanted to focus his efforts. There were many programs where the doctors and nurses were at the cutting-edge of key medical breakthroughs. Dr Lansky felt moved to support them. In his will he created a designated fund to provide advanced specialist training for Hadassah doctors and nurses in Gene Therapy.

(N.B. names have been charged in these in these last two examples)

"Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem is arguably the finest hospital in the Middle East and Hadassah UK is its British supporter’s charitable association. Hadassah Hospital is a remarkable institution. It employs staff and treats patients regardless of their ethnic origin or their religion.”

- Dr Thomas Stuttaford-The Times

How to make a Will
People who support Hadassah during their lifetime can also leave a gift in their Will. Once provision has been made for your family, there are several ways in which you can choose to leave a gift to Hadassah. Your solicitors will advise you which type of will suits your circumstances best. Shown below are the three types of legacy gifts.

1. Residuary Legacy – this is the remainder of your estate after all other bequests and expenses have been deducted. A residual legacy has the benefit of keeping pace with inflation.

2. Pecuniary Legacy - this is a gift of a specified amount of money, for example £10,000. However unlike a residual legacy, inflation can reduce the value of a pecuniary gift.

3. Specific Legacy – this is the gift of a specific item such as property, shares, jewellery or other valuables.
